SA violinist comes home to capture hearts on tour

Currently living in Boston and teaching at Tufts University and Boston University, as well as serving on the faculty of MIT’s Emerson programme, Uranovsky also enjoys a thriving career as a soloist, recitalist, chamber musician and orchestral musician across the globe.

During her brief South African tour, from 7 to 17 June 2018, she will perform in Grahamstown, Hermanus, McGregor, Bloemfontein and Johannesburg.

Uranovsky has compiled a superb programme for her concert tour, which includes two beautiful violin sonatas: Sonata No. 1 in G Major Op. 78, by Brahms and Beethoven’s evergreen Violin Sonata No. 5 in F Major, Op. 24 (also known as the Spring Sonata).

She will also play two exquisite romanzas that are sure to melt hearts: the Romanza Andaluza by the Spanish composer Pablo de Sarasate and Czech composer Dvoøák’s Romance in F Minor, Op. 11.

Uranovsky will conclude her performances with a rendition of From My Homeland, for violin and piano, by Dvoøák’s compatriot Bedøich Smetana, regarded as the founding father of Czech music – who, like Beethoven, had lost his hearing by the time he composed this piece.

Her collaborative accompanists will be Tertia Visser Downie for the first three concerts of the tour and Annalien Ball for the last two.

Downie is an accomplished South African pianist who won the prestigious Mabel Quick Overseas Scholarship, and who currently lectures at the South African College of Music at the University of Cape Town. Ball is a professional accompanist who accompanies undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Pretoria, and whose recent performance highlights include recitals with French violinist Philippe Graffin.

Uranovsky herself is no stranger to South African audiences, returning frequently to her homeland to perform. During her successful and varied international career she has held the position of concertmaster with Italy’s Orchestra Geminiani de Fallonica and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s Symphony Orchestra and was assistant concertmaster of the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra.

A founding member of the Montage Music Society, she has recorded for that project as well as for the BBC, SABC and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. She performs regularly in groups around Boston and has performed for Prince Charles and Princess Anne. Uranovsky has received numerous South African and international music prizes since her debut at the age of 15, going on to enchant as a soloist with various orchestras and in recital on stages across the globe.
